Kauai United Way has been holding its Walk-A-Thon since 1970,? said Dimples, ?but this year we wanted to try something a little different by rewarding the top money-raisers. We may have some surprises for next year, as well.? ?It?s a new way for us to raise awareness,? added Scott, ?that our Walk is the easiest way for any Kauai non-profit group to raise money for themselves.?

This year, 640 walkers raised about $40,000 to benefit island non-profit groups.

The Kauai United Way Walk-A-Thon is held on the last Saturday of each October. The Walk was dreamed up by Dr. Arthur Loo as a way to get money to smaller, less well-organized Kauai non-profit groups while also providing a boost to the vital community building work of Kauai United Way. Half the money raised goes to the 27 Participating Agencies of Kauai United Way
and the other half goes to the Kauai non-profit of each walker?s choice. To benefit, Kauai non-profit groups do not have to be formally registered with the IRS. For more information, call Kauai United Way at 245-2043.
